Iceland is being touted as the land of the future for information technology.

It is clear that the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano has not dashed interest in Iceland's appeal as a data center location. Last month, Opera Software announced plans to move its data processing work to a new data center in Iceland.

Katie Fehrenbacher, writing for Earth2Tech, says there is a gold rush mentality when it comes to building data centers in Iceland right now. Two factors are clearly in Iceland's favor: location and abundant geothermal power and hydropower. The country's placement makes it ideal for companies in both the U.S. and Europe and its rich green power resources allow for 100 percent clean power at the same price or less than services powered by traditional energy sources. Iceland offers a number of advantages for data centers, known as energy hogs, as energy costs continue to rise and the clamor for green energy sources intensifies.
