The open source OpenStack cloud project is set to move ahead in 2015 in a number of key areas, with networking being one of them. One of the leading voices in the OpenStack Neutron networking community belongs to Cisco and its cloud computing CTO, Lew Tucker.
In a video interview with Enterprise Networking Planet, Tucker details his views on the road ahead for networking in the cloud. Tucker said that work in OpenStack Neutron develops in cycles. For the recent OpenStack Juno release, IPv6 networking support was expanded. For the next release in 2015, Tucker expects that IPv6 support will be further stabilized.
There are a lot of different working groups at OpenStack. One of them is for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), which will impact networking support in the future. For NFV, OpenStack will need to become carrier-grade, with much higher levels of availability than what is currently supported.
There are all manner of individual services that could land in OpenStack, including DNS-as-a-Service, which is currently being developed in the OpenStack Designate project. From Tucker's perspective, however, he'd rather see OpenStack Neutron remain focused on core capabilities.
"I would like to see Neutron remain with core capabilities so we can add additional networking services alongside it, with projects that are small and narrowly focused that might draw on Neutron rather than continuously growing Neutron as a project base," Tucker said.
Looking forward, Tucker said that the challenge is whether or not Neutron can go after enterprise networking and the large scale carrier space at the same time. By having stable interfaces, Tucker's view is that both enterprises and carriers will be able to benefit.
