Teneo Embraces Riverbed for WAN Optimization as a Service Offering

Technology integrator now aims to help organizations improve WAN connectivity, without the need for fixed capital costs.

In the modern world of network connectivity, few organizations want to pay up front capital costs for hardware, which has lead to increasing demand for 'As-a-Service' models.

Technology integrator Teneo is now providing its customers with a new WAN Optimization as a service offering, that aims to make it easier than ever, for organizatiosns to improve their existing WAN connectivity. The new service makes use of Riverbed's SteelHead WAN Optimization platform and is an expansion of a managed service that Teneo had already been providing.

"In the early days, we were generally working with global legal and construction and engineering customers who were losing time (and money) due to unacceptable download times for large documents and files," Marc Sollars, CTO, Teneo told EnterpriseNetworkingPlanet. "Most are still customers today."

Sollars said that Teneo established its' managed service for Riverbed SteelHead in 2007. As a Service is the next logical step, as Teneo's customers shift the way they want to consume IT – first software, now hardware. The move to an 'As a Service' offering for Teneo has been enabled in part by Riverbed, which now offers subscription pricing to the channel as part of their embedded solution and services program. 

"We've taken it and innovated around it to create our own product – WAN Optimization as a Service," Sollars said. "Our service includes everything you need to make WAN Optimization a reality."

The WAN Optimization as a Service is not just about service, but also includes hardware. Sollars said that Teneo specifies the latest appliances that will give the customer capacity for growth.

"We ship, deploy and configure the appliances as part of the service," Sollars said. "Virtual appliances can also be deployed where needed." 


In terms of applications, when WAN Optimization technologies first debuted over a decade ago, a primary purpose was to improve CIFS and SMB (file sharing) traffic and the same is true today. Beyond CIFS/SMB, Sollars noted that with the move to the cloud, the whole Office 365 suite is on everyone’s mind – SharePoint, OneDrive, Emails, Dynamics along with all SSL traffic. Additionally he added that other common applications that can benefit from WAN optimization is salesforce.com as well as data replication traffic, such as data backups.

To be clear, WAN Optimization is not the same as SD-WAN, which is more about aggregate bandwidth. Sollars said that Teneo already offers managed services around each of the technologies in the Riverbed portfolio. Managed SD-WAN is an example. He added that Teneo started working with Talari Networks in 2011, before Gartner defined the SD-WAN category. Teneo began working with Riverbed’s SteelConnect SD-WAN technology as soon as it became available and Sollars said that his firm also works with Viptela.

"We established our SD-WAN practice internally last year so we could help customers choose the right SD-WAN solution for their business depending on the outcomes they required," Sollars said. "Our SD-WAN as a Service offering is due to be announced in future along with a Connectivity as a Service offering to help customers see maximum agility and cost savings from SD-WAN."
