Dutch Authorities Take Down Bredolab Botnet

Authorities also arrested an Armenian man suspected of renting out Bredolab-infected computers.

An IDG News Service article on The New York Times reports that Dutch authorities say they have seized and disconnected nearly 150 servers used to control the Bredolab botnet.The servers were part of the network run by  the largest hosting provider in the Netherlands, LeaseWeb.

In addition, a joint effort between security vendor Fox IT and Dutch law enforcement resulted in the arrest of an Armenian man suspected of renting Bredolab-infected computers to cyber crime players in other countries.

The Bredolab botnet was significant. By the end of last year, it was estimated that as many as 3.6 billion Bredolab malware e-mails were in circulation globally each day, according to researchers at MessageLabs.
