Gmail Spam on the Rise

Only 1 percent spam e-mails sent from Gmail addresses are from actual Gmail accounts.

According to Commtouch's quarterly Internet Threats Trend Report, "Gmail.com" is the most abused domain name, reports Computerworld.

Commtouch says that only 1 percent of spam e-mails sent from Gmail addresses are from actual Gmail accounts. The report notes that between 5 percent to 10 percent of all spam seems to come from Gmail accounts. Other findings from the study include:

  • During the first three months of 2010, 83 percent of all e-mail traffic was spam.
  • Pharmacy spam made up 81 percent of all spam messages.
  • Brazil leads the pack in producing the most zombie computers, 14 percent of the global total.
