by Kara Reeder

Victor Pleshchuk has been sentenced to four years' probation and an $8.9 million fine.

According to Computerworld, Victor Pleshchuk, mastermind behind the 2008 attack on RBS WorldPay, has been sentenced to four years' probation and an $8.9 million fine.

Prosecutors claim that Pleshchuk and his gang bagged more than $9 million in cash in one day by exploiting a breach at payment processor RBS WorldPay. The Department of Justice has indicted eight Russian and Eastern European computer hackers for their involvement in the breach.

Russia has been battling a reputation for being soft on cyber crime. However, this light sentence won't go far in changing that perception, says Computerworld.
