Brocade is continuing to sell off various parts of its IP networking business, and the most recent piece to go is the Virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC). Mavenir Systems announced on July 31 that it was acquiring Brocade's vEPC business, though no financial terms are being publicly disclosed.
Under the terms of the deal that have been publicly shared, Mavenir will be acquiring the vEPC product line including all associated Intellectual Property (IP) which comprises 22 granted and pending patents, a research and development facility in Mumbai, India and associated customer support and maintenance contracts.
Brocade first announced the vEPC technology in February 2016. In a podcast with EnterpriseNetworkingPlanet at the time vEPC was released, Kevin Shatzkamer, Brocade’s chief technology officer for mobility and mobile networks at Brocade, explained what the technology is all about.
The vEPC technology is particularly usefull for 5G wireless infrastructure which is where it will fit into Mavenir's plans.
"We are building a 5G architecture with control plane-user plane separation and stateless VNFs," Ashok Khuntia, GM and EVP of Mavenir’s Access Products division said in a statement. "When bundled with our virtualized radio access network product, Mavenir offers a complete, fully virtualized end-to-end next generation core and access network.”
Brocade is currently in the process of being acquired by Broadcom in a $5.9 deal first announced in November 2016 that has not yet closed. As part of the deal, Brocade is first selling off its IP networking assets to avoid competition with Broadcom's client base.
In June, Brocade announced the sale of its vADC technology to Pulse Secure, while the Vyatta virtual networking business unit was sold to AT&T. In March, Extreme Networks announced its intention to acquire Brocades' Data Center Networking business. Earlier this year in February, Brocade's Ruckus Wireless and ICX switch business were sold to Arris for $800 million.
