Less-than-ideal circumstances aren't hindering Juniper's new direction or Rami Rahim's success in leading it.

Rami Rahim became CEO of Juniper Networks in November of 2014 and has been on a mission to re-engineer and re-focus the networking vendor. It's a mission he's succeeding at.

Juniper is developing new software as well as new hardware and silicon to advance its vision of cloud networking and high performance. In a video interview, Rahim discusses why in the cloud and software defined era, hardware still matters.

"All networking hardware and security infrastructure needs to run on hardware of some form, whether it's a server, dedicated appliance or a high-end router, " Rahim said. "Hardware continues to be an area we invest in, especially in areas where there is a need for large amounts of performance."

Hardware and Software Defined Networking (SDN) are not mutually exclusive endeavors, either. Rahim said that once an organization has an SDN controller and they start to use it, it needs to have open interfaces to hardware. Those open interfaces and the underlying need for hardware create an opportunity for vendors like Juniper to have discussions with customers about how hardware works effectively with the SDN controller they have adopted.

Overall, since Rahim took over as CEO of Juniper, he's confident of his leadership and the job.

"I'm loving it, I have really enjoyed the transition," Rahim said. "I'm very pleased with where we are right now."
