This Calif.-based company provides users free VoIP throughout the U.S. – you just have to buy the box, a one-time expense.

"There are many Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, but for the past several years, I've been happily using Vonage, which is probably the best known," writes Mercury News columnist Larry Magid on SiliconValley.com.

"But as much as I like Vonage, I found a service I like even better. Palo Alto-based Ooma offers free unlimited calls to the United States and low-cost calls to other countries, starting at less than 2 cents a minute." Magid writes.

"There are a couple of catches. You have to buy the adapter starting at $220 — a one-time purchase — and you have to pay about $3.50 a month in mandatory taxes and fees," he writes.
