This improvement in comfort level will bring the number of SIP trunks to nearly tripple 2009 levels by 2013.

"In its simplest form, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is a service offered by an Internet telephony service provider (ITSP) that permits businesses with an installed private branch exchange (PBX) to use voice over IP (VoIP) outside the enterprise network by using the same connection as the Internet connection. As such, SIP trunking is a simple way for organizations to accomplish something that they have already but for less money, with equal or better quality, and with greater functionality," writes analyst Denise Culver on Heavy Reading IP Services Insider.
