Unified Communications options grow with new RealPresence Touch and OTX Studio releases.

Polycom is updating its RealPresence collaboration platform this week with new and updated products.

On the hardware front is the the new RealPresence Touch, a dedicated collaboration device for Polycom's RealPresence Group Series and immersive telepresence solutions.

"It is specially designed for the demanding needs of a room environment, with specific features you don’t typically find in consumer tablet devices," Craig Durr, director of Product Management at Polycom, told Enterprise Networking Planet.

Durr said that the RealPresence Touch includes a sturdy single piece design, a dedicated Ethernet port that supports Power over Ethernet (so it is not susceptible to the irregularities of wireless connections), and a Kensington-style lock port to secure the controller.

"It runs specially designed software that works in parallel with RealPresence Group Series to deliver a highly responsive and intuitive interface to the user," Durr said.

Durr explained that, generally speaking, the Polycom RealPresence Group Series software runs only on the RealPresence Group Series hardware, which is built upon specialized digital signal processors, purpose-built microprocessors with architecture optimized for the operational needs of video and audio encoding and decoding. The software is not currently available for any Android or iOS device.

Another new product from Polycom is the RealPresence OTX Studio, an immersive telepresence solution that uses Group Series and other Polycom technology as its engine.

"It is purpose-built to deliver the absolute best video, audio and content experiences that simulates a true across-the-table experience," Brian Phillips, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at Polycom, explained to Enterprise Networking Planet.
