While there is no shortage of competition in the SDN market, in some respects all the noise is helpful. It serves to educate the market.
"On one hand we compete on deals, but we all have a common interest helping people to understand the new software defined way of doing networking. It reminds me of the early days of networking, when companies were helping people to understand interoperable, inter-networking," Larry Lang, CEO of PLUMgrid, told Enterprise Networking Planet.
PLUMgrid's prime focus in recent years has turned to OpenStack. Lang commented that as organizations decide to use a private cloud approach, many are choosing OpenStack. While OpenStack SDN is PLUMgrid's focus, Lang noted that his company will also aim to build products and services for adjacent areas. One such product is called CloudApex. It provides a map between the physical and virtual networking worlds, enabling organizations to correlate the two.
"I joke that [CloudApex] is like the red pill and the blue pill in the Matrix, and you can take one pill or the other to see either one of the layers," Lang said. "It's a new product, but it's adjacent to what we have been doing."
As SDN deployments grow, security is serving to become a key driver. Lang said that the ability to segment applications and treat each segment like a virtual tenant is an attractive concept to many organizations. SDN is also helping to enable the DevOps model for streamlined development to operation deployment.
Looking forward, the challenge is to help bridge the divide between DevOps and networking.
