Recent research reports from both Gartner and IDC agree that sales of smartphoneswhich among other functionalities allow users to place VoIP calls and thus save significant money on phone minutesare booming. In fact they've outstripped earlier predictions and will exceed last year's sales by more than 50 percent.
The IDC report, Worldwide Quarterly Phone Tracker, further predicts that market share ranking will do some significant shifting, with Google's Android the big winnermoving from a little over 16 percent this year to nearly 25 percent by 2014and Symbian the big looserdropping by some 10 percent but remaining top dog with over 30 percent total share.
