What the Google Talk Launch Says About the Skype IPO

The barriers to entry for would-be Internet telephony providers are dropping away rapidly.

"At the point that Google Inc. paid $68 million for Global IP Solutions Holding AB the clock began ticking on the launch of its own Internet phone service," writes Dow Jones columnist Paul Sharma on the Wall Street Journal blog.

"Three months on and Google this week announces Gmail users will now be able to call telephones directly from their e-mail. A consequence: Skype had better hurry its IPO along," Sharma writes.
